Sensorineural hearing loss is a common type of hearing loss and with conductive hearing loss, it affects a vast majority of those who have deficit in their ability to hear. The causes of this kind of problem are many in number. This is the reason for many people to be affected too.
The reason for Sensorineural hearing loss to occur is the damage to the nerves in the ear. There are different mechanisms of injury. The acoustic nerves can be damaged at times because of trauma. A list of the other reasons for hearing deficit due to sensorineural problem is given here.
Prolonged exposure to sound: A loud sound that repeatedly is present is one of the major reasons for this condition. Machinery making too much noise are handled by some people. Exposure to loud noise for considerable time can cause deafness.
Use of drugs: Chemotherapy for diseases can also lead to this condition. Some diseases have to be controlled with high dose of drugs that can cause this side effect. Antibiotics are the reason behind this problem. Some of the other drugs that can lead to sensorineural hearing loss include ototoxic drugs, antibiotics, diuretics and salicylates.
Diseases: Some people may suffer from some specific diseases that can also cause the person to suffer from loss of hearing. There are some common diseases like mumps and measles that have seen to cause deafness in many people. The other diseases that can lead to the same problem include herpes, syphilis, meningitis etc. In most of these diseases, the nerves, especially the one going to the ear may be affected and this is the reason for the Sensorineural hearing loss.
Increase pressure is another cause of deafness. Barotraums is the name given to such pressure. When the person is a sea diver, deep sea diving without the proper precautions could lead to sudden changes in the pressure in the ear and this too can cause deafness in the person.
Damage to nerves: Any damage to the nerves that occurs can also cause this problem. Head injury is a reason too, because when there is injury to the head because of trauma, the brain could be damaged and when the area for hearing in the brain is damaged, it can also lead to deafness.
Treating the condition may help in some people, but usually the deafness is permanent and the only option that the person will have is to use the digital hearing aids.
